PHOENIX - A 3 month-old baby boy drowned in a bathtub at a home near 27th Ave & Filmore. Police say the child may have been in the water for up to an hour before anyone noticed.
Police say the father put his three young sons in the bathtub before 10 a.m. Tuesday; he turned on the water and apparently forgot.
The kids grandmother, father, and their mother were seen walking to a crisis response van, police say they were all at the home when the drowning happened.
"It appears that the guardians that were inside the home may have laid down and fallen asleep, they were awakened by the water coming onto the floor of the residence," said Sgt. Trent Crump.
The 3 year-old and 1 year-old are believed to be okay. The baby at just 3 months old was discovered unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Phoenix Police arrested the father, Carlos Castillo, on charges of 2nd degree murder and child abuse. Castillo was initially detained for a felony warrant for another incident.
Neighbors are frustrated over a preventable tragedy such as this.
"They should watch them, there 're so many things they are telling them to watch their kids, and no one is watching their kids, and it's just a shame that this has to happen," said Marissa Chavez.
Some in the neighborhood are reaching out to the family to show support, they are building a memorial on the front sidewalk.
"I just came to show some love to the parents, take some balloons and candles, a teddy bear, to show love and some respect to the family," said Stacie Rubianes.
